Where’s Brendan?
I like to keep this blog updated pretty frequently, but in a lot of ways this blog is a lot like my style when I’m using a microphone: I keep things concise, and I never speak just because I like hearing the sound of my own voice. Take note: if you want a DJ who’ll be screaming needlessly into the microphone all night long like a rapper promoting his next CD, I’m not that guy.
With that said, I’ve been doing some really great things lately that I haven’t posted about yet. Here’s just a sample:
- A couple of weeks ago, I met with a business coach. We talked about my business, how I’d like to improve it, and what steps I can take to better communicate with my clients. I’m already putting some of his suggestions to work.
- I’ve been upgrading my equipment. There have been some HUGE advancements in DJ gear in the past year, and I love working with new technologies, designs and innovations. I’ll be the first to admit that having the newest, cutting-edge equipment doesn’t make anyone a better DJ; talent absolutely comes first. However, having the best tools available definitely helps a DJ provide a higher level of entertainment to the client. Like the saying goes, work smarter, not harder.
- I’ve been collaborating with other DJs and taking notes. For example, I spent last Friday night at a Sweet 16 party that my friend Victor Rodrigues was hired to DJ. We’ve been friends for quite some time, but this was the first time I was able to attend one of his events. I’m glad I was able to see him in action – our style of DJing is very similar and we can certainly benefit from each others’ knowledge and experiences.
- I saw “Juno”. I figured it would be along the line of a Farrelly Brothers-type film, but I couldn’t be more wrong. It’s better. And although it’s filled with laugh-out-loud moments, it’s also surprisingly moving. I didn’t expect to get choked up by it, but it got me. Five stars!
- I’ve taken some time to relax with my wife Julie and our 10-month old Coonhound, Lila. When summertime comes and I’m booked solid with weddings and other events, free time is a commodity. So, I enjoy it while I can!
