Although I planned to spend most of Saturday preparing for Sunday’s bridal show, my wife had read about the casting call for an upcoming Martin Scorsese movie filming in Taunton and decided that she wanted to go to it (they were looking for 600 extras). Although I’m not a big movie fan (unless it’s a comedy with a great soundtrack), I went along just to see what it was about. So, we arrived at the BU student union building at 10:20 on Saturday morning and took our place in line.
A very long line. We were in it for two hours.
I admit that I’m not a happy camper when I have to wait in long lines. And to make things worse, it seems that I always get stuck next to a chit-chatty person who wants to share their entire life story with me even though I don’t know who they are and have no interest in becoming best friends. So, on Saturday I got to listen to a woman I’ll call “Sally”. She was there because of an email she got through her runner’s club. Apparently the casting agencies try to get runners to come to these types of events when they’re looking for lean people. Sally was a lean person; she told me so. She also pointed about at least 20 other “lean people” while we were in line. I learned a lot about lean people while waiting in that line. And honestly, I hope I’m not chosen to be in this movie. With my luck, I’d run into Sally again.
Sunday’s bridal show at White’s of Westport was a much better experience. There were lots of brides who braved the snowstorm to attend, and I got to catch up with some friends who were also exhibiting there. It’s like a mini-reunion. There are some vendors I see frequently, and some that I only see at these shows. Although it was a long show, the day went by fairly quickly.
Tonight I’m off to a different type of event: the monthly meeting of the Southern New England Association of Professional DJs. It’s a relatively new group, founded last year by Luke Renchan of Luke’s DJ Service in Pawtucket RI, and the meetings have generally been very informative. Tonight’s should be no exception.
